AdminHistory | Tower Hamlets Council saw a period of decentralisation of its administration under Liberal Democrat control between 1986 and 1994. This gave local areas more control over decision-making.
Seven Standing Neighbourhood Committees (SNCs) were created (the assigned collection archive reference codes are in brackets):
Bethnal Green (L/BGN) Wapping (L/WAN) Bow (L/BON) Globe Town (L/GTN) Isle of Dogs (L/IDN) Poplar (L/PON) and Stepney.
Each was independent with a Neighbourhood Chief Executive and offices. The clerking for meetings was often done centrally by Corporate Services, London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Their names were later simplified from Standing Neighbourhood Committees to Neighbourhoods. Wapping Standing Neighbourhood Committee therefore changed its name to Wapping Neighbourhood. In 1994 the return of a Labour administration signalled the end of the neighbourhood system. The Council along with associated local forum and area groups continued to administer the borough and give a voice to residents. |
