AdminHistoryThe Soanes Centre was opened in 1993 and is based in Bow. It houses the educational centre at the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, a local nature reserve and historic cemetery owned by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets; the educational charity Setpoint London East and the office of the Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.

Led by Setpoint (charity number 1073086), a charity that advances public education within science, technology and the environment for young people of age in the north London boroughs and surrounding areas, the Centre facilitates outreach activities. In 2020 the Centre's commitments were to "providing inspirational hands on workshops to enrich the teaching of STEM" [science, technology, engineering and mathematics]. This work has included schools, ranging from the Foundation Stage to Key Stages 1 - 4. The emphasis has focused on technical and environmental aspects set against a background of outdoor education.

The Soanes Centre operates next to 33 acres of Nature Reserve and Woodland which comprises the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. This has been referred to by the Centre as "our outdoor classroom". Initiatives have included Environmental Explorers; Litter Bugs; Recycling; Soils and Soilmakers and Food Chains, together with workshops with a biological and ecological remit. Workshops are designed for schools to visits to the Centre or for Setpoint to run them in schools.

Its work has been funded by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets; the Garfield Weston Foundation via its support for environmental projects; the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and its backing for young people via more effective educational opportunities; the Bates Wells Foundation via its encouragement of projects aimed at sustainable local change; and the Ernest Cook Foundation via its active policy of children learning from the land through outdoor education.
